Skincare After 50: What Changes and What Helps

Skincare After 50: What Changes and What Helps
Skincare 🕐 Reading time: 8 minutes For women 50+

Skin after 50 doesn't age badly, it simply follows new rules. Find out what is happening in it, why cream alone isn't enough and how to support it gently from the outside and the inside.

Some time ago, a customer who was approaching fifty wrote to us. She wanted to know which cream to use during the day and which at night. A seemingly simple question. But behind it there is often a second, unspoken one: why is my skin suddenly behaving differently than before – and am I doing something wrong?

The answer is reassuring: no, you are not. Skin after fifty doesn't get worse, it just starts following different rules. It's like a garden in autumn: the soil is the same, but the season is different, so it needs different watering, different feeding and different time.

What changes in skin after fifty

Face of a mature woman in morning light and a rose

The main role is played by hormonal change. As estrogen levels drop, the skin gradually loses part of what used to keep it firm, elastic and hydrated. It is not a single problem but four changes that meet all at once:

🌸

Collagen declines

Collagen and elastin are the springs in the mattress of your skin. When there are fewer of them, the mattress gives way: deeper wrinkles appear and the skin loses firmness.

💧

The protective barrier weakens

The skin is thinner and dries out faster. A feeling of tightness, sensitivity or redness are often the first signals that your current cream is no longer enough.

🔄

Renewal slows down

Old cells linger longer on the surface, the tone looks duller and pigment spots from years in the sun become more visible.

👁️

The eye area ages first

The skin around the eyes is thin and almost without sebaceous glands, so fatigue and time leave their marks there first.

💡 Did you know?

The skin around the eyes is about three times thinner than on the rest of the face, and we blink roughly 15,000× a day. So don't expect the same cream as for your cheeks to care for it properly. The eye area needs its own care, a different concentration and a different composition.

🔬 Scientific study

The classic study by Brincat et al., published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology (1987), examined the skin of postmenopausal women. It showed that skin loses approximately 30 % of its collagen in the first five years after menopause and then roughly 2 % per year. The loss depended mainly on the time elapsed since menopause, not just on the date of birth. Skin therefore ages according to the hormonal phase, which is why it makes no sense to care for it the same way as in your forties.

Why a cream on the surface isn't enough

Don't get us wrong: a good cream is important. It hydrates, protects and is a pleasant ritual. But skin is not a wall on which you can simply paint a new coat. It is living tissue that constantly renews itself. And when renewal slows down, surface care alone tends to ease the problem rather than solve it at the root.

Skin after fifty therefore benefits most from care on three levels:

  • On the surface – gentle cleansing without aggressive substances and a cream that hydrates and protects the skin.
  • In depth – ingredients that support the skin where it renews itself. Lavylites cosmetics use nanoeffectors for this, meaning plant extracts prepared to penetrate deeper than ordinary creams.
  • From within – nutrients the skin gets from food, and body systems that carry away waste and deliver oxygen. The last part of the article is about them.

A routine for skin after 50, step by step

Serum with a dropper for fresh and youthful skin

We recommend this procedure directly on the product pages. It takes only a few minutes, and the order of the steps makes sense:

  1. Cleanse – Lavyl Clean or the detoxifying Solvyl Clean. Apply to damp skin, leave on for 3–5 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water, ideally with a cosmetic sponge.
  2. Activate – mist your skin with the spray Lavyl Auricum Sensitive. This wakes the skin up and helps it absorb the following care better.
  3. Add a serum – a few drops of Exyol SC, an oil serum with plant stem cells. Wait a few minutes for it to absorb.
  4. Finish with a cream – a cream from the Gemma line: Bright or Helvetia in the morning, Prevent in the evening.
  5. Don't forget your eyes – Nofret for everyday long-term care, Leon for a quick reset after a sleepless night.

Which Gemma cream to choose? There are three, and they don't compete with each other:

  • Gemma Bright – a day cream for sensitive skin that evens out the tone and brightens. Suitable if pigment spots or a dull look bother you. It was a finalist in the GBWA 2024 competition in the best facial care product category.
  • Gemma Helvetia – a day cream for all skin types with an emphasis on deep hydration.
  • Gemma Prevent – a night cream for mature skin. GBWA 2020 honored it as the most innovative anti-aging cream among 325 entered brands.

You don't have to start with everything. Skincare shouldn't be a test of your wallet or your patience. If you want to start simple, cleansing and one Gemma cream are enough. Add the serum and eye care later, once you see how your skin reacts. Give it at least 4–8 weeks – that is how long it takes for skin cells to renew.

⚠️ Skin renews itself in weeks, not days. Expect at least 4–8 weeks of regular care before you judge the result.

“I am 54 years old and have been using Exyol SC for 6 weeks. The wrinkles around my eyes are visibly less noticeable, my skin is firmer and you glow. Friends ask what I had done. Nothing – ‘just’ Exyol.”

– Helena M., 54 years old, verified customer

Your skin is a mirror of the whole body

Skin is the largest organ of the body and is often the first to reveal that something inside isn't quite right. A dull tone, fatigue, lost radiance – it doesn't have to be just age. Skincare therefore doesn't end at the face. It has two more layers: daily body maintenance and support for the systems that supply and cleanse the skin.

The foundation: movement and daily care

Older woman in colorful clothing

The cheapest and oldest cosmetic you know is movement. Lymph has no pump of its own like the heart; it moves mainly thanks to muscle work. A daily walk thus supports circulation and the removal of waste from tissues, and your skin benefits from it.

The second foundation is gentle daily hygiene. You use shower gel, shampoo and body lotion every day, so their composition is “written” into your skin day after day. That's why it makes sense to choose herbal and gentle variants. If you want to go even further, there are also the detoxifying variants Solvyl Clean, Solvyl Hair and Solvyl Body.

Daily body care

Body systems that care for your skin from within

Imagine the body as a city. Your skin is its shop window, and it only looks good when the city's infrastructure works:

🌿

The gut is the supply

It absorbs nutrients from which the skin builds collagen and other building blocks.

💧

Lymph is the garbage collection

It carries waste and excess fluid away from tissues. When it “goes on strike”, the skin tends to be puffy and tired.

❤️

Blood vessels are the highways

They deliver oxygen and nutrients to the very last cell. The more elastic the vessels, the better the skin is supplied.

🧲

Heavy metals are a long-term burden

They reach us from the environment and everyday life. Heavy metal detox is the last key layer of care.

Let's say it right away: we don't promise that a herbal digestive concentrate will smooth out your wrinkles. But skin that has something to build from and a way to dispose of waste has better conditions for renewal. And that is the point.

Supporting the body systems from within

⚠️ Internal support is not a substitute for medical care. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before use.

Skin after 50 in five steps

  1. Don't take the changes as your own fault – hormones change the rules, not your care.
  2. Cleanse gently – without aggressive substances, on damp skin and with enough time.
  3. Support the skin in depth – serum, day and night cream and separate eye care.
  4. Care for the whole body – movement, gentle daily care and support for the gut, lymph and vessels.
  5. Be patient – skin renews itself in weeks, give it at least 4–8 weeks.

Fifty is not the end of radiance. Skin after fifty doesn't need to fight, it needs care that understands it. Give it time, gentleness and support from the outside and the inside – and it will reward you.
